Modernizing Extension and Advisory Services Modernizing Extension and Advisory Services The objective for MEAS is to define and disseminate good practice strategies and approaches to establishing efficient, effective and financially sustainable rural extension and advisory service systems in selected countries. Extension systems in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central America need to undergo significant change if they are to effectively serve the food security and economic development needs of resource-poor men and women farmers. New approaches must draw on full breadth of resources in public, private and civil society organizations and utilized available advanced information and communications technologies. MEAS is a Center of Excellence that seeks to promote and support such endeavors. Our goal is to help transform and modernize these extension systems, so they can play a key role in both increasing farm incomes and enhancing the livelihoods of the rural poor, especially farm women. Components: The MEAS project is made up of three components expected to benefit a wide audience of users, including developing country policymakers and technical specialists, development practitioners from NGOs, other donors, and consultants, and USAID staff and projects. Activities are expected to be relevant to country programs responding to challenges of enhancing food security and climate change: We emphasize participatory approaches and collaborative development work with host extension programs and with other donors and practitioners. |

Anjuman Muzareen Punjab Anjuman Muzareen Punjab is a movement of 1 million landless tenants based in villages stretching over 10 districts of the Punjab (Okara, Khanewal, Multan, Lahore, Vihari, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Pakpattan and Sheikhupura and so on). In these districts of Punjab landless tenants settled this uncultivated land with their hard labour and they have tilled the soil for over a century. In other words these tenants have been cultivating the land for four generations. The official documents state that the land belongs to the Government of Punjab. However, on these lands companies and military agencies such as the RVFC, Military Seed Corporation, Livestock Agricultural Department, and Dairy Farm, Seed Research Farm and so on are operating. These companies have been collecting revenue from the Muzareen both in kind and in money terms. According to Government of Punjab Board of Revenue the payments from the tenants to these Departments and companies are unlawful since these organizations have no legal claim over ownership or revenue generated from this land. In the past the tenants of these areas have voiced their concern but despite several proclamations they have been unable to obtain ownership rights over land that should belong to the tenants. |

British Society of Sugar Technologists (BSST) - UNITED KINGDOM The Society was originally formed in 1981 [as the British Society of Sugar Cane Technologists] to provide a focus for the many UK residents who have connections with the cane sugar industry, including the growing of cane, its processing to raw and refined sugar and the utilisation of its products and by-products. Over the years the membership and its interests broadened to cover beet as well as cane and end users as well as producers so the society changed its name in 2004, dropping the word 'Cane' from its title. The Society meets twice a year; the Annual General Meeting is held in the Spring in London and an Autumn Technical Meeting is held at a venue related to the industry. While giving members the opportunity to present and discuss formal papers, the meetings also provide a forum for the informal exchange of technical information. |

Sugar Knowledge International Limited (SKIL) Sugar Knowledge International Limited, known throughout the world's sugar industry as SKIL, was established in 1980 to provide consultancy services to the cane sugar sector. It was intended that advice would be available for both agricultural and factory operations. From these modest beginnings it has grown into a company providing a broad range of professional services for all aspects of the beet and cane sugar industries. The founders of SKIL, and all the current directors, built their careers working for multinational sugar companies such as Tate + Lyle, Booker and British Sugar. This ensures that services are provided with a clear understanding of the corporate context including, perhaps most importantly, full commercial awareness. The company, however, jealously guards its independence from any sugar group and is one of the few truly independent organisations offering professional services to the sugar industry internationally. |
